The Great East Japan Earthquake

RENGO would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to you for your solidarity and support following the devastating earthquake which occurred on 11 March 2011.

The RENGO Headquarters received approximately 700 million yen in donations from our national and international friends. A large part of these warm donations has been handed over to the governors of three most disaster-stricken prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima for the support of the livelihood of the sufferers.

From 31 March until the end of September 2011, a total of 35,000 person-day volunteers from our affiliates and local RENGOs were sent to Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. RENGO was the only private organisation to continuously dispatch such a large number of volunteers. Their sincere and disciplined activities help RENGO gain recognition and trust from victims, afflicted communities, and the government. These activities are a prime example of “RENGO’s face-to-face movement” and have led to increased awareness and presence of RENGO even in local communities.
