Comments on the Tokai village nuclear plant accident

October 1, 1999

Kiyoshi SASAMORI
General Secretary
Japanese Trade Union Confederation (JTUC-RENGO)

First of all, we should minimize radiation and take urgent countermeasure to improve the situation. RENGO demands those related to the cause of the accident react as quick as possible to restore a usual life to the. Also, the government must find the precise reason for the accident.

All the nuclear-related institutions should check and improve their security systems and defenses. They should also obey rules for processing nuclear materials.

In hindsight, it is clear that the response, diagnosis and treatment of those subject to radiation, and instructions to residents were very slow. We should think about improving responses and post-accident countermeasures. Additionally, we should deal thoroughly and openly with all accident-related information.

Those involved with the accident should formulate security countermeasures so as not to repeat the similar accident.
Furthermore, the central and local governments put forward their best efforts to maintain the safety of the region surrounding the plant, because ultimately the anxieties felt in Tokai village are shared by the entire nation.
