Rengo & Nikkeiren Jointly Request for Economic Countermeans with an Immediate Effect
(19 December 1997)

As the management crisis of banks, securities and general construction companies has come to be noticed by the public, there is an increasing anxiety about the future of Japanese economy and a possible increase in the unemployed. In such circumstance, Rengo and Japanese Federation of Employers' Associations (Nikkeiren) held a press conference where they introduced a joint emergency request to Prime Minister on 11 December 1997.
At the joint press conference, Rengo's President Washio explained that the joint request was made possible by the agreement of Rengo and Nikkeiren that the 5 billion-yen tax reduction was necessary in terms of economic effect regardless into which this reduction should be resolved. The request clarified that the responsibility of the lenders and the competent authority should be investigated and disclosed and the public fund should be minimised and used only for the depositors' protection.
Mr. Nemoto, Nikkeiren's Chairman, called for an economic counterplan with an immediate effect and emphasized that the Government should go ahead with the plan by its all means. The request was handed to Mr. Muraoka, Chief Secretary of the Cabinet, on 15 December.
