A nation-wide volunteer gathering is held in Kobe 3 years after the Earthquakes

Rengo, the Local Rengo Hyogo and ILEC (Institute of labour Education & Culture) jointly organized the National Volunteer Conference in Kobe on 16 January, which was attended by 350 people coming from all the parts of Japan.

Mr. Kohchiyama, Vice President of Rengo, addressed on behalf of the organisers of the Meeting that many of the Rengo's members contributed to the restoration of the infrastructures together with the total number of 56,000 volunteers. Rengo also donated 700 million-yen as the result of the fund-raising campaign and 100 tons of relief goods. In addition, it established the Rengo-citizens Volunteer Network to ensure the continuity of trade unions involvement in this field. Mr. Kohchiyama concluded that Rengo would also make its efforts to establish local communities.

Hyogo Governor Mr. Kaihara expressed thanks on behalf of citizens badly damaged by the Earthquakes. The Meeting was followed by a panel discussion inviting the representatives of volunteer associations and novelists where the participants discussed how volunteer actions should be and how the cooperation between volunteer associations could be strengthened and how workers could be actively involved in the communities' activities.
