More Female Voice in Policy-Making
The Promotion Forum for Gender Equal Participation held
(5 June 1998)
RENGO held the 2 days Promotion Forum for Gender Equal Participation in Sendai city. The 160 participants, which 30% was male, attended the Forum, and exchanged straight opinions at panel discussions and work shops. At the opening, Mr. Sasamori, General-Secretary of RENGO, commented, "Women's power and vitality are distinguished these days, not men's. The voice which changes the public opinion is not from men anymore," and opened the big expectation of women's ability.



Halfway Measure for Recession and Unemployment
SG Commented on the Proposed Amendment of the Fiscal Structure Reform Law

The proposed amendment of the Fiscal Structure Reform Law and the Tax Cuts Related Bills have passed the plenary session of the Upper House on 29 May. In response to this, RENGO announced the Secretary General's comment saying that these bills were only at the half way and not enough and that RENGO kept demanding further drastic change.


Worst Unemployment Rate Renewed
SG Deplored on Unemployment Situation

The unemployment rate of April 98 was renewed to the worse record of 4.1%. RENGO released the Secretary General's comment on 29 May saying that it was quite regrettable since the government without means had worsened the present situation of growing unemployment. On 2 June, the comment by Mr. Sasamori, Secretary General of RENGO, was released and criticized the government which set up the Office of Industrial Structure Conversion and Employment Promotion saying that that carried the traditional measures and lacked concreteness and effectiveness as the initial explosive for employment promotion.


25 Million People's Signatures Made Fruit

The Support Law for Rebuilding of Natural Disaster Victims' Life passed at the plenary session of the Upper House on 15 May. "The National Congress for Establishment of Nationwide Security System against Natural Disaster", which RENGO takes its part, and "the Prefectural Congress" made pressure to the political parties by conducting a campaign to collect signatures of 25 million people.


Revision of Dispatched Labor System cannot be Accepted, SG commented
(5 June 1998)
The 372th Central Council for Vocational Stability was held with the chairman, Prof. Nishikawa of Keio Univ., on 14 May. The council adopted the Report by the Sub-committee on Private Sector Demand which suggested to loosen the range of dispatched workers. The report was submitted to the Ministry of Labour despite strong opposition by the labor side. The dispatched labor was regarded so far as a temporary coordination method in labor market and had been restricted into 26 specialized fields. In response to this, RENGO released Secretary General's comment on 14 May, saying "this suggestion was fixed from the result. We cannot possibly accept it since no effective policy to protect workers is seen".
