98 Regional Minimum Wages Settled Nationwide
(18 September 1998)

1998 fiscal year minimum wages by prefecture, and their implementation dates were decided as shown below.
Discussions for 1998 (FY) minimum wages by industry, however, are still underway at each regional committee.
The raise rate was set first by Osaka's associated industries of manufacturing machines and metal products on August 31, then Hyogo's general machinery, and Saga's ceramics and others.

Special Fund Raising Drive Planned for
Papua New Guinea Tsunami and China Flood Victims
(18 September 1998)
The 15th Central Executive Committee Meeting was held on September 10. At the meeting, RENGO decided to undertake a special fund raising drive to help cover damages sustained from the tsunami caused by the July 17th earthquake in Papua New Guinea, and flooding due to the heavy rains in Southern China this June.
Working through the local unions in each country, the Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress and the All China Federation of Trade Unions, this fund will be used for support programs that meet the needs of the refugees.

Discussion on Damages from Economic Turmoil
APRO Opens Women's Committee in Tokyo
(18 September 1998)
The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions/Asia Pacific Regional Organization (ICFTU/APRO) opened its 10th Women's Committee on September 16 at RENGO headquarters in Tokyo. Seven Asian countries including RENGO were in attendance. Assistant General Secretary Kumazaki, of RENGO presided over the presentation of reports and a lively discussion.
On September 17, APRO General Secretary Izumi and participants of the Women's Committee paneled an "International Women's Symposium."
