2nd Youth Activities Rally and Reception

On February 5 in a Tokyo hotel, RENGO held its 2nd Youth Activities Rally and Reception with 120 people in attendance. Mr. Takahashi, RENGO Organizational Affairs Department Chief, gave the opening speech followed by a working report by Ms. Mashima from Volunteers Supporting Team. A panel discussion entitled "Youth Activities in New Era" was also held.
Panelists, representing five constituent organizations and local RENGO, introduced each activity and emphasized that the biggest issues facing the new era are unification of thought among the youth and cooperation with administrative offices and the Women's Committee.
A gathering around GS Sasamori at reception on February 5.General Secretary Sasamori rushed to the reception afterward expressing his hopes straightforwardly to the younger generation that "youth is the core power of RENGO. It is absolutely essential." Later, participants had the rare chance to enjoy a moment with Sasamori who ordinarily is very difficult to meet.

"Time to move from Agreement to Action"
National Convention for the Return of the Northern Territories

"We will resolve the issue by the end of the century," Prime Minister Obuchi, February 7. On February 7, "Northern Territories Day," the National Convention for Claiming Return of the Northern Territories was held at the Kudan Kaikan in Tokyo. RENGO is a member of its executive committee. Prime Minister Obuchi, as well as Foreign Minister Koumura, Management and Coordination Agency Director-General Ohta and many other leading government members attended the convention.
Prime Minister Obuchi stated in his strong speech to the 1500 participants that he hopes to resolve the issue this century. "Ever since last November's Moscow Principle Japan/Russian relations have shifted from mutual trust to agreement, and from agreement to a time to put deeds into action. We would like to invite President Yeltsin to Japan sometime early this year and we will work relentlessly to conclude a peace treaty by the year 2000."
The convention concluded with adoption of the following appeal. "We will promote more powerful national movements in the hope of building real peace and mutual friendship between our two countries."

RENGO members' meeting about the rounds of requiring visits to the diet members.On February 9, RENGO explained to all the diet members, except those from the Communist Party, that its policies should be achieved during this session and required them to work for those policies. RENGO also distributed the pamphlet "RENGO Demands on Important Policies at the 145th Ordinary Diet Session" to its members.
