The 2000 RENGO Peace Meetings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

RENGO held peace meetings in Hiroshima on 5 August and in Nagasaki on 8 August both in cooperation with Anti-Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs Conference and Anti-Nuclear Bombs Conference.
"A cry of atomic bomb victims should be heard by the world for abolishing nuclear weapons and building the peaceful new century without war." The participants strengthened their will to build the new century without war 55 years after the dropping of the atom bomb. In addition to the meetings, the local RENGO made peace actions such as the march and the silent prays in all over the country during the RENGO Peace Week from 3 to 9 August.

The 2000 RENGO Peace Hiroshima Conference was held on 5 August. At the beginning of the Conference Mr. Washio, President of RENGO, stated to 2,500 participants. "The year of 2000 is the international year of peace and culture. Each of us must work for the peaceful culture, which makes possible to discuss and negotiate a settlement. As the only atom-bombed nation, we are responsible to appeal against the fear about destructive power of nuclear weapons and it's aftereffect. Let's develop the movement with all the companies that wish for peace.
"It is then followed by the messages of Mr. Fujita, Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture and of Mr. Akiba, the Mayor of Hiroshima.
After the appeal, a motion of "Bring the 21st century to the peaceful world without the nuclear weapons" was adopted. The participants prayed for atomic bomb victims, surrounding the skeletal domed building in Hiroshima that still stood to commemorate the dropping of the atom bomb.
The RENGO Peace Nagasaki Conference was held on 8 August and participated by 2,500 people. After the pray and song expressing of the fear of atom bomb, Mr. Enomoto, RENGO Deputy President, stated that we requested the Government of Japan to show good leadership as an atom-bombed country. "We should hand over the thoughts on abolishment of nuclear weapons to the younger generation and develop the movement for the spirit of Okinawa, Hiroshima and Nagasaki toward the world.
"Mr. Kaneko, Governor of Nagasaki, and Mr. Ito, the Mayor of Nagasaki, participated in the Conference, and promised to make an effort toward promoting administration for peace.The conference adopted the appeal introduced by an atomic bomb victim who had been suffering from an aftereffect, the special resolution for the revision/expansion of the atom-bombed area in Nagasaki and the statement from Nagasaki.
