Aid Endorsed for 3 Countries (2nd) Tap Unused Aid for Natural Disaster Damages (3,10 August 2001) |
Based on an endorsement at the 19th Central Executive Committee Meeting held in February 2001, RENGO has been working on activities to assist Mongolia, India, and El Salvador. So far ¥36,142,166 yen has been gathered from 30 affiliated organizations and 16 local RENGO at various fund-raising campaigns. RENGO endorsed the contents of its emergency special aid campaign on August 3 at the 25th Central Executive Committee Meeting. Management of the Unused Funds of the Special Aid Campaign Fund RENGO has been working closely with local labor unions in these countries and the APRO from the position that how this aid, which is voluntarily subscribed from union members, will be used must be as clear as possible and that aid activities must follow local needs. (1) The special aid campaign fund to the three countries totaled Š23,500,000 with unused funds amounting to Š12,642,166. (2) Special aid campaigns conducted in 1998 and 1999 were used for assistance to China, Papua New Guinea, and Taiwan based on a Central Executive Committee Meeting endorsement. However, in the case of Turkey, RENGO implemented assistance by sending blankets by endorsement at the 6th Central Executive Committee Meeting held on March 9, 1999. Since that time, further assistance activities have not been conducted. RENGO held repeated communications with local trade unions to firm up assistance activities to provide clothing and materials for the construction of temporary shelters, but the local conditions are unable to receive them so RENGO has decided to give up concrete implementation. (3) Accordingly, the unused aid money from (2) above, Š10,475,843 and the unused portion from the three countries special aid campaign at this time total Š23,118,009. RENGO will utilize this unused aid fund to assist unfortunate damages caused by natural disasters in and out of the country in the future in accordance with the purposes of the special aid campaigns that RENGO conducted. |
