Nation Building after Military Regime Most Important
Burma Seminar for Democratization
(14,21 December 2001)
On December 10, United Nations’ Human Rights Day, RENGO held a Burma (Myanmar) Seminar at Sohyo Kaikan Hall in Chiyoda, Tokyo to understand the human rights abuses of the Burmese people under the military administration, and to think what we, as unions, union members, and citizens, can do about it. Approximately 40 people attended from affiliated organizations, local RENGO and related organizations.

At the outset of the seminar President Sasamori gave an opening speech appealing for the necessity of strengthening cooperation with Asian countries, “RENGO hopes to maintain future cooperation through the ‘Burma Japan Office’ in order to be the main supporter of democratizing activities.”

Current conditions and efforts were reported in the first part of the seminar from each of the following people. Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Professor Nemoto, RENGO Headquarters International Division Director Abe, Asia/Pacific Regional Secretary of International Transport Workers’ Federation Wada, International Labour Organization Tokyo Branch Office Director/Special Regional Advisor on Gender Issues Horiuchi, Burma Office Japan Director Min Nyo, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau/ First Southeast Asia Division Head Takahashi. An active discussion continued from the first half into the latter half with Kanda University of International Studies Professor Nagai acting as coordinator.
During the discussion, Director Min Nyo said, “Military administrations will infallibly collapse. What is most important is what kind of democratic country we will build after that.” He then asked for cooperation including human resource development.
Finally, Professor Nagai concluded the seminar summarizing the discussion, “taking this seminar as a first step, we should consider what kind of software is needed to rebuild Burma in line with international organizations.”
