Over our Goal: "1.7 Million" Signatures
Re-organizing/Downsizing of American Military Bases on Okinawa

(25 May 2001)

Amidst the repeated incidents and obscene acts committed by American soldiers stationed on Okinawa, 1.7 million signatures were gathered in the "1 Million Signature Drive to Reorganize/Downsize American Military Bases" in which RENGO played a central role to develop.

RENGO played a central role in this movement responding to a decision made by the Okinawan Prefectural Assembly seeking to downsize the U.S. Marines Corps and to revise the Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement. After the 20th Central Executive Committee Meeting ruled on the matter, 1.7 million signatures were gained nationwide greatly surpassing our original goal, despite the relatively short time of approximately two and a half months from the March 12 address until the May 23 collection. A summary of the collection follows.
The signatures are expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Director-General of Defense Agency but when they will be submitted is still being decided.

Nationwide (excluding Okinawa)
(affiliated organizations)
(Local RENGO)
1,323,881 people
(1,264,330 people)
(59,551 people)
Okinawa 377,388 people
Total 1,701,269 people
