Condemn Terrorist Attacks Emergency
Resolution on Sept. 11 Attack
(12 October 2001)

In light of the simultaneous terrorist attacks on the U.S., RENGO adopted the "Emergency Resolution on Simultaneous Terrorist Attacks" at its 7th regular convention. It seeks the following from the United Nations and each nation's government: (1) that necessary actions are taken to root out terrorism, (2) widening differentials, poverty and social insecurity in global economic society are eliminated and overcome, (3) support those people who are pushed into difficult circumstances due to terrorism.

The simultaneous terrorist attacks targeted on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. last September 11 involved not only U.S. citizens but also people from over 60 countries including Japan. More than 300 were victims of the tragedy and more than 5500 people remain missing. It is with great regret that firefighters and police officers engaged in rescue operations as well as a great number of labor union members were among the victims. RENGO expresses its heartfelt condolences to the victims of the tragedy and their families. Such cowardly terrorist attacks are a challenge not only to U.S. citizens but also to everyone throughout the world who seeks freedom, peace, and democracy, and RENGO condemns such despicable acts.

The September 11 attacks dealt a devastating blow both to the economy and citizens' lives. This blow has overflowed across national borders and gravely influenced the world economy. Adding to the situation in the U.S., its airline industry has been thrown into a critical state with 100,000 people losing their jobs, and employment has been threatened worldwide.

On behalf of Japanese workers, RENGO will support activities for solidarity with the workers throughout the world seeking freedom, peace, and democracy. RENGO also strongly requests that the United Nations and the governments of every nation take all necessary actions to eradicate terrorism, and make every possible effort to eliminate and overcome the expanding differentials, poverty and social insecurity in global economic society, which are potential factors that generate terrorism. Furthermore, RENGO strongly requests that support activities be conducted for the many who are driven into extremely difficult circumstances due to terrorism.

RENGO herein declares the above
