2001 National Senior Rally

(28 September 2001)

  The 2001 National Senior Rally took place at the Tokyo International Forum on September 15 hosted by the Japanese Federation of Senior and Retired Organizations (TAISHOKUSHA-RENGO) and co-hosted by RENGO. With "Establish a Safe and Reliable Social Security System" as its main slogan, the rally gathered 5,000 participants from nationwide with President Hatoyama of the Democratic Party of Japan and President Doi of the Social Democratic Party present.

  In his opening speech, JFSRO President Nishida criticized the Koizumi Cabinet's attitude toward the social security system stating "they say they will bring about reform with pain. The seniors and the weak are those who always suffer." He revealed his resolution that "we should promote our movements with in-depth discussion regarding Sasamori spoke saying, "if workers on active duty and the retired people cowhat we should do and what we will leave for our posterity. "
  Representing RENGO, SGme together with the power of 15 million, any administration would no doubt be influenced." He talked about the "Lifetime Union Member Concept" included in the "RENGO Vision for the 21st century" which is scheduled to be submitted at RENGO's 7th Regular Convention.
  Following SG Sasamori, Social Democratic Party President Doi emphasized that policies and measures for seniors are a social indicator. "Societies where seniors live heartily are societies that take care of their people." Democratic Party President Hatoyama said, "we seek to increase government liability on basic pensions to one half immediately and full payment by the government in the long run. Also, if we streamline the budget through information disclosure such as disclosing medical records on fees for medical treatment and making mandatory receipts, there will be no need to increase the senior's burden. Let us aim to make Japan the society where human dignity is maintained.
  After the closing ceremony, there was a memorial lecture entitled, "Medical and Nursing Care for the Elderly" by Kawasaki Saiwai Clinic Director Dr. Takahiro Sugiyama, and a stand-up comedy routine on medical topics by K.C. Takamine.
