Fight To the End
Angry Sit-In against Health Insurance Law Revision
(25 July 2002)

RENGO has maintained that "Increasing burdens without reform" will never be acceptable and have fought against the "revised" bill of the Health Insurance Law. Events have been escalating each day including the "10 million signature collection drive," street activities, and sit-in protests in front of the Diet, as well as observing the Committee of Health, Welfare and Labour of the House of Councilors. At the climax of committee deliberations on July 25, with just one week remaining before the current Diet session closes, RENGO conducted an angry sit-in in front of the Diet to kill the revised bill. 1000 people gathered in the pouring rain to pledge their resolve to fight to the end in order to halt a change for the worse.

Workers continue the sit-in in the rain. (July 25, Diet building.)

At the rally held after the sit-in, General Secretary Kusano said "during the hearing in the Committee of Health, Welfare and Labour at the House of Councilors, witnesses from both sides of the ruling and opposition parties stated objections to these revisions for the worse." He strongly condemned them saying, "any government that would take such extreme action, is surely one which has no regard for the people's wishes or thoughts and must start all over again." His remarks referred to the critical situation in which the ruling parties are likely to railroad the bill through the House of Councilors as they did in the House of Representatives.
Many in Congress including Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Kan, Social Democratic Party leader Doi, Liberal Party House of Representatives member Tsuzuki, and Independents Party Representative Tanabu rushed to the rally to express their determination to fight along with the four parties and unite together to quash the bill.
